Amazon Prime is a membership service offered by Amazon to give you amazing deals on thousands (or millions) of products on Amazon.

Prime is free to join for 30 days) for first-time subscribers, so you can try it without making a year-long commitment. Sign up ahead of Prime Day or at the holidays to get free shipping on gift purchases but don’t worry, you cancel any time.  There’s also a monthly Prime subscription at $14.99, though if you plan to use it for any length of time, an annual fee is a better deal.

Amazon Prime benefits:

  • FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items
  • The ability to rent Kindle ebooks from their nearly unlimited collection. These Kindle books are 100% free if you have a Kindle, Fire tablet, or Amazon Fire phone
  • Unlimited instant streaming of tens of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Video.
  • Unlimited ad-free access to over two million songs and over a thousand playlists
  • Free unlimited photo storage with Prime Photos
  • Some cities can use Amazon Prime for grocery delivery
  • Free release date delivery

The main Prime perk is free two-day shipping, but Prime members also get Prime Video streaming, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and Amazon Photos. If you’re a regular Amazon user, Prime is a pretty good deal. But perhaps you’re on a budget and are looking for ways to pay less than $139 a year for Amazon Prime free shipping and other perks. Here are some options.

1. Amazon Free 30 Days Trial

Yes, Amazon makes it simple for you to get addicted to using Amazon Prime with a 30-day free trial option. Amazon got me on this offer over  years ago and I couldn’t imagine life without the membership service now.

To get started simply log on to Amazon Prime and sign up for the free 30-day trial. After your monthly trial is over you can choose whether or not you want to become a Prime member.

If you choose not to enroll for Amazon Prime after the 30-day period sometimes they will give you another 30-day free trial. I haven’t tried this method but read about it in several forums.

A few days before your Amazon Prime membership is set to expire log into your account and cancel the service.

Amazon will email you and ask if you would like to try another 30-days for free! Simply click “Yes” and enjoy another 30 days of Amazon Prime for free!

2. Amazon Prime Student Membership Trial

Students can sign up for an Amazon Prime student membership for six months 100% free. Once the six-month trial period is over the fees are significantly discounted.

Students will only pay $5.49 per month for four years or once they graduate. The best part is that the Amazon Prime student membership trial includes almost all of the benefits of Prime for only a fraction of the cost.

You still receive free 2-day shipping, photo storage, and unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows. The only benefits that are not included are access to the Kindle eBook library and Prime Music.

Before you try to sneak one by Amazon by claiming to be a student, understand that you have to submit paperwork to take advantage of this offer.

3. Amazon Prime EBT or government assistance membership

The 30-day free trial for EBT or other government assistance program recipients includes all the same perks as a standard 30-day Amazon Prime free trial.

Do you pay month by month for a discounted Amazon Prime membership for government assistance recipients?

After the 30-day trial period is finished, you will be billed month-to-month at the noted discounted rate.

How often do you have to verify your eligibility for a discounted Amazon Prime membership?

To continue receiving a discounted Amazon Prime membership with an EBT card or other qualifying government assistance program, you must verify your status every 12 months. The discount can be received for up to four years from the initial date of sign up. To make things simple, Amazon will send an email whenever it is time to verify your credentials to ensure you continue to qualify for the discount.

Do you get the same access to Amazon Prime as regular members with a discounted Amazon Prime membership?

Yes. Qualifying EBT and other government assistance recipients get the same access as regular members of Amazon Prime—they also receive additional tailored perks and discounts including markdowns on groceries and essentials like baby food and diapers.
